Gamma Linolenic Acid Studies carried out in 1992 suggested that unsaturated fatty acids such as Gamma Linolenic Acid play an important role in regulating androgen action in target cells. Studies carried out in 1994 show that certain unsaturated fatty acids such as Gamma linolenic acid are potent 5 alpha reductase inhibitors and may be usefull in the treatment of disorders related to DHT such as benign prostratic hyperplasma, acne, androgenetic alopecia and female hirsuitism. Studies involving Gamma Linolenic Acid : STUDY: Growth suppression of hamster flank organs by topical application of gamma-linolenic and other fatty acid inhibitors of 5 alpha-reductase. STUDY: Androgen action: molecular mechanism and medical application. STUDY: Inhibition of steroid 5 alpha-reductase by specific aliphatic unsaturated fatty acids.
